Alva Studios – Tête de Femme – After Modigliani – Cast Museum Reproduction

This elongated stone head reproduces Amedeo Modigliani’s iconic “Tête de Femme,” the mask-like, column-form faces he carved in the 1910s under the influence of African tribal masks and Cycladic sculpture. Cast by Alva Studios of New York and copyrighted 1959, it is an authorized museum-quality reproduction rather than an original or attributed work, confirmed by the incised “REPLICA © 1959 ALVA STUDIOS” mark to the base. A brass identification plaque reading “Tête de Femme, Modigliani” is affixed to the black rectangular plinth on which the piece is permanently mounted, consistent with Alva Studios’ standard presentation for its gallery and museum reproduction line. The plinth underside is line with felt. The sculpture’s smooth, tapering planes and serene, elongated features remain faithful to Modigliani’s original carving.

Alva Studios was founded in 1948 in Long Island City, New York, by Viennese-born Alfred Wolkenberg, who had immigrated to the US in 1939. The company commissioned artists and craftsmen to produce authorized, museum-quality reproductions of ancient and modern sculpture, marketed as “Alva Museum Replicas” and sold through museum shops worldwide. It remained active until 1990.
