This oil on canvas still life by Andres Segovia depicts a tall, bulbous vase set within a partial interior corner, a dark drapery or screen visible along the right edge of the composition. The vase holds a cluster of red flowers accompanied by two distinct leaf forms, with the vase itself and the surrounding architectural space forming the focal points of the painting. The work is signed “Segovia” and dated “50” at the upper left, and is presented in a silk and gold leaf frame, with gold leaf on the inner molding and a painted finish on the outer.
The painting’s provenance includes Bonhams, Sunset Auction, June 23, 2013; Galerie Drouant-David, Paris; Paul Vallotton S.A., Lausanne; and E. and A. Silberman Galleries, New York. It was exhibited at the Berner Kunstmuseum in Bern as part of “Maîtres français du 19e et 20e siècles” in 1953. Gallery labels documenting this history remain affixed to the reverse.
Andres Segovia (1929–1996), an Argentine painter and the son of the classical guitarist of the same name, began his studies in Buenos Aires before relocating to Paris in the early 1950s. By the mid-1950s his paintings and lithographs were being exhibited across Europe, the United States, and Argentina. His work is held today in the permanent collections of MOCA and MOCA Los Angeles, among other institutions.
