This striking bronze horse sculpture, entitled “Il Cavalino,” captures the animal mid-stride with a dramatically arched neck, flowing tail, and richly textured dark patina that reveals the hand-worked surface characteristic of the lost wax casting process; the sinuous line of the tail and the alert turn of the head give the piece a sense of coiled energy despite its stillness.
Signed by the artist Barbara Beretich, the work comes from her personal home gallery in Claremont, California, a property later granted historical-site status by the city for its role in showcasing work by Claremont School artists.
Beretich, who grew up around livestock on her family’s California ranch before earning a BA in art from the University of Illinois and an MFA in sculpture in Claremont, became a formative figure in the Claremont School movement and a lifelong friend of French artist Françoise Gilot following time spent together in Europe. This sculpture reflects her deep, firsthand familiarity with animal anatomy and movement, translated into a confident and expressive bronze form suitable for a console, mantel, or pedestal display.
