A remarkable hand-hammered silver-plated copper bowl by Emilia Castillo, showcasing the celebrated Mexican artisan’s signature fusion of silver, copper, and semiprecious stone. This exceptional piece features a rope-wrapped rim threaded through malachite-inlaid rings, resting on a circular malachite base. The bowl is paired with its original matching ladle, crowned by a sculptural parrot handle inlaid with malachite and silver, a recurring Castillo motif that symbolizes her love of nature.
The interior reveals the warmth of the copper beneath the silver, emphasizing its handcrafted authenticity and time-earned patina. The ladle measures 14″H x 3.75″ diameter, beautifully proportioned to complement the bowl.
Emilia Castillo is the daughter of Antonio Castillo, one of the four founding brothers of Los Castillo, the legendary Taxco silver workshop established in the 1930s. Los Castillo became internationally celebrated for its innovative use of mixed materials: silver combined with copper, brass, and semi-precious stones.
Emilia inherited this artisanal legacy, establishing her own studio in Taxco in the late 1980s. Her work continues the family tradition of fine metalcraft while introducing a more organic modern aesthetic, blending silver-plated copper, natural stones, and hand-hammered textures in sculptural, contemporary forms.
