This antique hand-carved walnut box, adorned with a breathtaking relief of morning glories, stands as a testament to the work of a true master craftsman. The lid showcases a full bough of flowers and leaves rendered in extraordinary detail, The petals, veining, and stems are carved with a precision rarely seen in decorative woodwork. Bordering the perimeter, a repeating vocabulary of motifs adds architectural rhythm: spear-shaped leaves, a modified egg-and-dart molding, and additional ornamental detail.
The box retains its original keyhole escutcheon and working lock, though the key is no longer present. Four delicate carved feet lift the piece with an elegant, refined stance. The condition is remarkable given the intricacy of the carving. Acquired from the estate of Jerry Perenchio, the celebrated Hollywood dealmaker, Univision chairman, and legendary collector. His Bel Air compound, Chartwell, was renowned for its world-class European decorative arts assembled under the guidance of famed French interior designer Henri Samuel. This piece carries an original estate inventory number noting its origin from the corporate office.
