Gaston Sébire – French – 1920–2001 – Daisies in a White Pitcher – Oil on Canvas

$6,500

A lush, gestural bouquet of white oxeye daisies erupts from a hand-painted white pitcher, their loose, upward-reaching stems and dabbed white-and-yellow blooms set dramatically against a deep, near-black ground.. Sébire’s confident, impasto brushwork: thick ropes of green stem, quick flicks of white petal, carries the freshness and immediacy of a bouquet just cut and arranged, a hallmark of his mature still-life style. The pitcher itself, decorated with a sprig of painted cherries, grounds the composition with a touch of domestic warmth and color against the darker palette. The piece is signed in the lower right.

Sébire, largely self-taught, became one of the leading French still-life and floral painters of the postwar period. Canvases of this scale and ambition, with their characteristic tension between a somber, atmospheric background and an exuberant, light-filled bouquet, are among the most sought-after examples of his work.
