Gerhard Schliepstein for Rosenthal – Bavaria Art Deco Porcelain Wall Busts

$2,400

This pair of Art Deco wall masks was designed by German sculptor Gerhard Schliepstein for Rosenthal, Bavaria, and carries the model numbers 400 and 402. Each mask shares an identical stylized silhouette: an elongated oval face on a stepped, architectural plinth. The two are differentiated by their eye treatment: model 400 has smooth, lowered eyelids rendered in a serene, closed-eye expression, while model 402 has almond-shaped cut-out apertures giving it an open, attentive gaze. Both are glazed white porcelain, and both have a mounting hole for wall installation.

Each piece is marked on the reverse with the impressed name “Schliepstein,” the printed green Rosenthal Bavaria mark, and its respective model number. Condition is good, with light surface wear consistent with age and no visible chips or restoration noted from the photographs provided.

Schliepstein trained as a sculptor in Berlin and worked for Rosenthal from 1925 to 1937, becoming the firm’s exclusive designer from 1929 onward. His stylized, expressionist figures and masks are among the most sought-after examples of German Art Deco porcelain, and his work is held in institutional and private collections internationally.
