A commanding example of the canne technique by Gio Ponti for Venini, executed in a generous upright trumpet form with a gently undulating, free-formed rim. Vertical canes of colored glass: red, cobalt, teal, aubergine, straw, and periwinkle are arranged in a repeating polychrome sequence, gathered onto a blown colorless glass body and fused into the vessel wall so that the stripes run continuously from base to lip. The resulting surface is simultaneously precise and alive: the transparent canes transmit and refract light differently depending on viewing angle and ambient illumination, the colors deepening where they overlap and brightening where they stand alone against the clear ground.
The a canne technique, in which pre-formed rods of colored glass are incorporated into a blown form, is among the most demanding in the Murano repertoire, requiring exact coordination between the glassblower and the master who controls the cane arrangement to ensure regularity of stripe width and spacing across a continuously expanding form. Ponti’s contribution was to strip the technique of any decorative excess and let the color sequence itself carry the design: no gold inclusions, no filigree, no secondary pattern. It is only the vertical rhythm of the canes and the organic silhouette of the blown form working in concert.
Gio Ponti (1891–1979), arguably the central figure of twentieth-century Italian modernism, brought to his collaboration with Venini the same disciplined graphic intelligence that animated his architecture, ceramics, and furniture. His canne designs for the firm, first presented at the 1950 Venice Biennale, translated the bold primary palette of postwar Italian design into a medium that had been associated for centuries with ornamental complexity, producing objects that felt entirely of their moment while drawing on the full depth of Murano’s technical tradition. Three-line acid-etched signature to underside: venini / murano / ITALIA.
