Piero Fornasetti “Tema e Variazioni” – Rectangular Tray – Lina Cavalieri Face

This rectangular lacquered wood tray was designed by Piero Fornasetti and produced by the Atelier Fornasetti under his son Barnaba Fornasetti. It features Piero’s signature “Tema e Variazioni” motif and the graphic black-and-white face of Lina Cavalieri overlaid with bold vertical stripes in red, blue, yellow, green, magenta, and light blue. The eyes of Cavalieri’s face peer out between the color bands, a playful reworking of one of Fornasetti’s most recognizable images. The tray is marked “N3/2013 MC” in ink alongside the printed “Fornasetti Milano, Made in Italy” stamp on its edge, dating production to 2013; this design is no longer in current production. Its stepped, molded wood border is finished in a warm mahogany tone. A wonderful example of Fornasetti’s graphic, surrealist approach to functional design, equally suited for serving or as a decorative object. The tray comes with its original box as shown in the listing pictures.
