This commanding oversized floral still life is a striking example of the work of Armenian-American painter Sarkis Sarkisian (1909–1977). The composition features a bold bouquet of orange tulips, pink lilies, and deep blue irises arranged in a geometric cream-toned vase, set against a richly textured mauve background. A vibrant cobalt blue at the base of the canvas anchors the composition with characteristic confidence. Though unsigned, provenance is strong — the painting was acquired directly from the original collector who purchased it from Sarkisian himself.
Born in Smyrna, Turkey, Sarkisian emigrated to Detroit with his Armenian family and became one of Michigan’s most respected painter-educators, known for landscapes, figures, and still lifes. His work was exhibited at major venues including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery, and is held in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. The scale and presence of this piece make it a rare and collectible find.
