A superb set of eight dining chairs executed by Los Angeles maker Phyllis Morris after the iconic Loop design introduced by American decorator Frances Elkins in the 1930s. Comprising two armchairs and six side chairs, the set is finished in crisp white lacquer and newly upholstered in a smokey lavender/grey mohair velvet – the canonical presentation for this enduring design.
The sculptural backs are composed of interlocking elliptical loops arranged in an open fretwork pattern rooted in 18th-century Chinese Chippendale precedent, a form Elkins revived and made her signature. The graceful curved arms on the host chairs echo the looping vocabulary of the backs, while the cabriole legs with pad feet add a quietly classical note that keeps the design grounded. The high-gloss lacquer finish is in excellent condition throughout.
Phyllis Morris, the celebrated Hollywood interior designer and furniture maker, produced some of the finest American interpretations of the Loop chair, favored by the entertainment industry’s most design-conscious clientele and widely regarded as among the best quality reproductions of the form.
