Set of 6 Dining Chairs by Thonet Industries Inc – American – 1970s

A striking set of six armchairs by Thonet Industries, the American arm of the legendary Thonet firm, executed in polished tubular chrome steel with newly upholstered seats and curved back rests in a supple teal blue leather. The design updates Thonet’s Bauhaus tubular steel vocabulary for the American market, pairing the firm’s signature chrome engineering with a distinctly 1970s sensibility: generous proportions, rounded forms, and a bold color choice that reads as confident and current.

Each chair features a horseshoe-shaped upholstered back rail supported by a single central chrome stem, above a D-shaped padded seat. The base is formed from bent tubular chrome steel in a continuous loop, providing both structural integrity and a light, sculptural presence. The chrome is in excellent condition with strong reflectivity throughout.

Thonet Industries, established in York, Pennsylvania, continued the legacy of the original Austrian firm founded by Michael Thonet in the 19th century, producing some of the most refined tubular steel furniture available to the American market during the postwar decades.
