This is a strong example of Robert Frame’s mature gestural style: bold, expressive brushwork with a rich palette of deep blues, earthy browns, and bursts of yellow-green that give the woodland scene real energy. The composition, with tall dark tree trunks framing a luminous middle ground, is classic Frame. The gold leaf floater frame surrounds the piece with a 1/2″ border and 1.5 depth. The canvas measures 60″ x 42″.
The painting is signed “R. Frame” on the front lower left and signed and dated on verso – all consistent with his known practice. 1965 falls squarely in a productive and well-regarded period of his career, which adds to its desirability. This piece is from the estate of Jim and Jane Kresl, Long Beach, California.
Frame’s work has sold at auction in a range from $50 to $15,535, with the record set at Christie’s Los Angeles in 2004. Robert Frame (1924–1999) was a Santa Barbara-based California Modernist who received a Guggenheim Fellowship and exhibited at major institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum, the De Young Museum, and the Norton Simon Museum, where his work remains in the permanent collection.
