William Haines Lattice-Back Armchair – Estate of George Cukor – 1940s

$16,500

This armchair by William Haines exemplifies the designer’s signature blend of Hollywood Regency glamour and clean-lined sophistication, its open X-lattice arms and back framed in warm blonde wood and paired with sculptural block legs and a gently curved apron. The frame’s airy, architectural lattice work contrasts beautifully with the plush, tufted coral velvet cushions, creating a chair that reads as both structural and inviting, equally suited to a sitting room or as an accent piece within a larger seating arrangement. The frame retains the original finish when purchased and the cushions reupholstered in coral velvet, presenting in ready-to-use condition. The coral velvet was chosen to emulate the original upholstery as seen in the in situ photograph of Cucor’s living room. The chair descends from the estate of legendary director George Cukor, adding a notable layer of provenance to an already exceptional design pedigree.

A rare and highly collectible work by William Haines, created for one of his most prominent clients, this chair stands as both a functional furnishing and a lasting work of design history. This chair can be seen in situ on page 103 of the definitive book on Haines’ work: Class Act William Haines Legendary Hollywood Decorator. The picture can be seen in the listing.
