A monumental Neoclassical column floor lamp in oak, its shaft turned and fluted in the manner of a Doric or Tuscan column, rising from a stepped square plinth base to a molded capital. The form translates the language of classical architecture into a decorative lighting fixture, a device well suited to the layered, old-world formality that defined William Haines’s residential interiors of the period. The lamp is fitted with a pleated silk-style drum shade in cream.
By repute, from the Beverly Hills estate of Jack L. Warner, with interiors designed by William Haines, 1939; thence by descent to his daughter, Barbara Warner Howard; thence to her heirs.
Jack L. Warner, co-founder of Warner Bros. Pictures, engaged William Haines – the former MGM leading man turned preeminent decorator to Hollywood’s studio elite – to design the interiors of his Beverly Hills estate, as Haines did for the Warner family’s residences additionally in Palm Springs and New York City. Haines was known for pairing California glamour with classical and continental furnishings of real weight and formality, and a column lamp of this scale and gravitas is consistent with the material he specified for grand interior spaces: libraries, entrance halls, and drawing rooms in particular.
