This dramatic three-panel folding screen by Frank Kyle is a commanding example of Mexican Mid-Century Modernism at its most refined. Each panel is finished in a deep, mirror-like black lacquer. Raised brass inlays are arranged in an abstract geometric pattern of horizontal and vertical lines across the three panels. The composition reads almost architectural, recalling the bold linearity of Art Deco while remaining thoroughly modern.
Brass-tipped cone feet anchor the piece with sculptural punctuation, and brass hardware runs the length of the hinged joins, adding continuity to the design. The screen functions equally well as a room divider, a dramatic backdrop, or a standalone decorative object.
Frank B. Kyle – interior designer, sculptor, and artist – opened his design and decorating studio, Kyle de México, S.A., in Mexico City in the early 1950s, establishing himself first in the Zona Rosa and later in the La Florida neighborhood. Donshoemaker Originally from Minneapolis, Kyle had relocated to Mexico City, where he opened his gallery exhibiting both furniture and sculpture. Adn-galeria One of his trademarks was the exceptional lacquer finish he applied to select furniture pieces, Side Gallery and this screen is a definitive example of that mastery.
