An exceptional and historically important Pair of Neoclassical Style Consoles With Ocher Travertine Tops by Billy Haines, custom designed for a 1933 Los Angeles residence originally conceived by architect Paul Williams and later transformed by Haines in 1963. Commissioned by a prominent young family, the home became a showcase of Haines at the height of his career—where architectural interventions and bespoke furnishings seamlessly merged glamour with restraint.
These one-of-a-kind consoles were created specifically to flank the living room fireplace. Their façades incorporate antique carved oak panels—likely salvaged architectural elements such as valances—ingeniously integrated into newly constructed bases. Notably, the carved ornamentation is integral to the solid oak panels rather than applied. One panel retains a transport label reading “Pickford & Co Ramsgate Station,” suggesting European sourcing, consistent with Haines’ well-documented practice of acquiring architectural fragments abroad.
The richly veined ocher travertine tops display a warm, golden tonality rarely encountered today. The bases are crafted with square, fluted front legs and rear pilaster supports, reinforcing the neoclassical architectural vocabulary.
A rare opportunity to acquire museum-worthy examples of Pair of Neoclassical Style Consoles With Ocher Travertine Tops by Billy Haines, complete with documented provenance and Certificate of Authenticity.
